On October 16, 2011 I had the pleasure of attending Old Pasadena’s Cultural Dance Festival. They showcased Brazilian, Mexican Folklorico, Chinese, Hawaiian, Taihitian, Russian, Russian Gypsy dances on stage. Meanwhile, in a nearby location they had FREE dance classes in tap, hiphop, Argentine Tango, and African fusion.
The Russian & Russian gypsy dancers from RussianEntertainment Unlimited were incredible athletes, dancers and entertainers. Director Youri Nelzine developed a magnificent show for the moderate sized stage with dancers whose ethnic heritage includes Georgia, Moldavia, Armenia, Russia and the Ukraine. Not only were we entertained, but Youri led the audience in learning a Romanian and a Russian folk dance.
Mr. Dimitri Bagramyan was kind enough to talk with me after the performance about his training under Vakhtang Chabukiani in Georgia (the country), how a bigger stage could have provided opportunity for more “tricks” and his pleasure in the dancing opportunities in southern California.
